"Some one is watching and waiting there"

First, a meme:
You Are

A Classic Pumpkin Face

You would make a good pumpkin pie.

Now, back to the countdown! According to the Edmonton Journal, the third scariest poem is "The Little Green Orchard" by Walter de la Mare (1873-1956):

Some one is always sitting there,
In the little green orchard;
Even when the sun is high
In noon's unclouded sky,
And faintly droning goes
The bee from rose to rose,
Some one in shadow is sitting there
In the little green orchard.

Yes, when the twilight's falling softly
In the little green orchard;
When the grey dew distills
And every flower-cup fills;
When the last blackbird says,
'What -- what!' and goes her way -- ssh!
I have heard voices calling softly
In the little green orchard.

Not that I am afraid of being there,
In the little green orchard;
Why, when the moon's been bright,
Shedding her lonesome light,
And moths like ghosties come,
And the horned snail leaves home:
I've sat there, whispering and listening there,
In the little green orchard.

Only it's strange to be feeling there,
In the little green orchard;
Whether you paint or draw,
Dig, hammer, chop or saw;
When you are most alone,
All but the silence gone...
Some one is watching and waiting there,
In the little green orchard.

I love that you're so excited about Halloween! No one here seems to care, which is very frustrating as Halloween + Bonfire Night = best week ever! There's a much bigger hoo-haa about New Year's & Hogmanay, which seems a shame to me as it's missing out on the opportunity to have two party weeks instead of just one. Plus, there's toffee apples and pumpkin pie (mmm, pumpkin pie... must persuade mother to make Teh Pie) and warming autumn drinks and conkers and going out to graveyards and - and - it's Samhain! *bounces up and down*

^What you said! :D I'm with you 100%. It's not that I don't like other holidays, but there's always room for one more, and this is SO much fun (not to mention tasty and thoughtful), and it just doesn't get the enthusiasm it deserves. I'm having a ridiculous amount of fun, taking my morning coffee time to post, celebrating the season for a few minutes each day. I'm really thrilled that you like the posts. Thanks!

It is, isn't it? And I think it's all the spookier because that some one is left up to the imagination. All we know is he or she is there, watching...

I seem to recal this meme from last year. Are we recycling? ;)

Great poem, and I'm not a poem guy!

Now that you mention it, I think that meme has reappeared a time or two. :) It's like the proverbial bad penny, continually turning up.

So glad you like the poem!

Now there's the subject for a horror story. :)
