Happy Halloween 2009!

The day is here, my friends! We made it! Happy Halloween, Happy Samhain, and (slightly early) Happy Día de los Muertos!

Thank you so much for joining me in my month-long holiday celebration. I truly hope you've enjoyed it. I have! Please stop by, grab a virtual latte or cider or hot cocoa, a candied apple or some roasted pumpkin seeds, or even a goblet of blood and a plate of brains, and say hello!

Happy birthday to greenhoodloxley, and also happy early birthday to ithiliana, as well! May you both enjoy a wonderful day and a fantastic year to come.

Spooky Text of the Day: What can I say? This is my favorite. I hope you enjoy "Hallowe'en in a Suburb" by H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937).

The steeples are white in the wild moonlight,
And the trees have a silver glare;
Past the chimneys high see the vampires fly,
And the harpies of upper air,
That flutter and laugh and stare.

For the village dead to the moon outspread
Never shone in the sunset's gleam,
But grew out of the deep that the dead years keep
Where the rivers of madness stream
Down the gulfs to a pit of dream.

A chill wind weaves through the rows of sheaves
In the meadows that shimmer pale,
And comes to twine where the headstones shine
And the ghouls of the churchyard wail
For harvests that fly and fail.

Not a breath of the strange grey gods of change
That tore from the past its own
Can quicken this hour, when a spectral power
Spreads sleep o'er the cosmic throne,
And looses the vast unknown.

So here again stretch the vale and plain
That moons long-forgotten saw,
And the dead leap gay in the pallid ray,
Sprung out of the tomb's black maw
To shake all the world with awe.

And all that the morn shall greet forlorn,
The ugliness and the pest
Of rows where thick rise the stones and brick,
Shall some day be with the rest,
And brood with the shades unblest.

Then wild in the dark let the lemurs bark,
And the leprous spires ascend;
For new and old alike in the fold
Of horror and death are penned,
For the hounds of Time to rend.

Thanks as ever for the wonderfully spooky October ride! And an especial thanks for the link to "10 Horror Films You Can Watch for Free Online This Halloween." There's a couple there I've always wanted to see but never got around to purchasing.

But tonight, after the trick-or-treaters leave, I plan on watching "Macabre." I remember it vividly from my childhood and after many years finally managed to obtain a copy. I hope it's half as scary as I remember!

TCM is playing "Circus of Horror" tonight at 12:45. I had only seen a still from this in an old Famous Monsters of Filmland, showing the cruelly handsome Anton Diffring with the side of his face mutilated.

TCM showed some good old films this year ("The Ghoul", "The Body Snatcher", "Dead of Night"), I wish I could say that about AMC. They are playing NOTLD now at least. But TCM didn't show "Voodoo Island" this year, I've missed it two years in a row. It's schlock but I remember seeing it once as a child, until my grandmother made us turn it off because it was too scary for her.

Thank you for a wonderful month of posts!

I need to see Voodoo Island! I'm sorry TCM missed that this year. I did catch part of The Body Snatcher as it played, which is always good. We ended up watching a double-feature: the new Burrowers (2008, which we hadn't seen before) and the classic Lewton Isle of the Dead (1944), and that was a lovely combination.

Thanks so much for joining me for my countdown this year! It was great fun.

Voodoo Island
It was actually our grandfather who made us turn it off, our grandmother was busy throwing up in the bathroom. It was that good!

You're most welcome! I hope you had a great time watching Macabre. We ended up with a double-feature: the new Burrowers (2008) and the classic Isle of the Dead (1944) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. :)

Happy Hallowe'en and thank you so much for the spooktacular month of posts. I have enjoyed them immensely. I love anything spooky but have always hated the commercialism of Hallowe'en and have put up with it only because our North American born child loved it. As he is now in high school, he has been declared too old to trick or treat, so he and a friend are handing out the candy while I lurk like a Great Old One in the basement.
