Good things:

* The nominees for the 2012 Hugo Award have been announced. I'm thrilled that StarShipSofa is a finalist, and I'm grateful to everyone who listens to and supports the podcast. Special congrats to my friends at the wonderful Apex Magazine for their nomination, as well!

* In honor of the second series of Sherlock coming to the US next month, the brilliant folks at DarkCargo (who are always up to something interesting) are hosting a "Sherlock! a-long!" for reading (or re-reading) the stories that correspond to the episodes.

* My appreciation for the Hunger Games film, which already was quite high, only increased after seeing it a second time. It definitely rewards multiple viewings.

* Speaking of The Hunger Games, have you seen the new Katniss Barbie? I can't quite decide if I'm horrified, amused, or pleased by this development. (After all, this may be the first one since the Dana Scully Barbie that actually represents a positive role model!)

* The first official shirt for The Hobbit makes me smile with glee. I can't wait to see Martin Freeman's performance.

* Now that Justified's season is over, there's Breaking Bad to anticipate. Of course, I'd be even more excited if this happened:

* Happy early birthday wishes to prettybirdy979, cherylmmorgan, muuranker, izhilzha, and justicemuffins. May each of you enjoy a wonderful day and a brilliant year to come!

It doesn't feel cruel here; this morning it was 38 degrees and glorious! Oh, summer, never come...

“April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain.”

Katniss Barbie is kind of disturbing... But then, so was the Tippi Hedren.

And, my co-worker JUST BROUGHT ME LILACS!!! \o/

Lilacs!!! How gorgeous (and lovely of your co-worker)! :D

That Tippi Hedren Barbie is genuinely scary.

I bet Hitchcock wishes he'd had one. ;)

Thank you for the birthday wishes! :)

And I kind of surprised myself by quite liking Katniss Barbie.

You bet! May this next year be your very best yet. *hugs*

Me, too! I wanted to be disapproving, but then it struck me how much fun I would've had with a Katniss Barbie. You could do a lot worse than having the Girl On Fire on your team. (I'm pretty sure she could've put my 12" Boba Fett in his place...) I'm also impressed with how much they changed her look to make the doll fit the role.

I want spring to last forever. No summer!

I JUST finally got to see The Hunger Games and really enjoyed it.

I like the Katniss Barbie...but I'm also curious as to what she'll do. Will she hunt the other Barbies? Or will she teach them how to survive? *ponders*

Amen to no summer!

I'm so, so glad you liked the film.

but I'm also curious as to what she'll do. Will she hunt the other Barbies? Or will she teach them how to survive?

*cackles* Oh wow, there are YouTube videos just waiting to happen, aren't there?

Whatever happens, she'll do her best to protect Skipper, I'm pretty sure of that. :) And maybe take out a few Kens, too.

And then maybe lead a rebellion against Mattel?

I have not read/seen Hunger Games, and have been opposed (in very curmudgeonly fashion) since the 60s to the idea of multiple Barbies, including the ones based on other characters/people - but I have to say that the Barbie above looks very cool and BAMFY.

But this is Barbie. (Yes, I have a vintage #4 Barbie, although this is a stock photo.)

Oh, lovely! As a historian, I have to give special props to the purists, so I can appreciate your position on Barbie revisionism.

That said, I would've adored Katniss Barbie as a child. Finally, a girl who could hold her own against my 12" Boba Fett! (The other Barbies were too busy wearing heels... *g*)

Ahhh! Why didn't I think of that! Of course she'll protect Skipper. Now I kinda want to dig out our really ancient Barbies and act this out.

I would watch that video. Probably several times.

A Sherlock read-a-thon? But, but, but...I just *finished* reading the complete annotated Sherlock Holmes a little while ago, I'm really kinda Sherlocked out at moment. Besides, I am immersing myself into all things Hobbit. ;~)
