News (I Hope) You Can Use

* My latest "Looking Back on Genre History" segment is a review of the centuries-spanning "Destroyed London" exhibit at Loncon 3/Worldcon. It's available on Episode 353 of StarShipSofa. If you listen, I hope you enjoy!

* Here's a petition to ask that Jamie Lloyd's current production of Richard III at Trafalgar Studios (with Martin Freeman in the title role) be recorded for either broadcast or DVD release. Here's hoping!

* In other news, the latest episode of Who Do You Think You Are? focuses on the ancestors of actor Martin Shaw. If, like me, you're a fan of Mr. Shaw -- or, like me, you're interested in 19th-century British Industrial history -- this episode is well worth watching. There's also an outtake scene available here.

I really liked MS's Who Do You Think You Are - definitely worth watching!

(I was a bit thrilled about the "outtake" scene that you linked to though - only to discover it wasn't an outtake (a blooper, or scene they fluffed *g*), but a deleted scene... I guess they mean the same thing in your neck of the woods?)

Wasn't it great? I thought it was especially lovely that he's now in contact with his half-aunt.

Sorry for any confusion! I simply meant outtake in the dictionary definition sense ("a scene that is not used in the final version of a movie or television show"). I totally didn't mean to be a tease! :(

I'm looking forward to watching the Martin Shaw episode of Who do you think you are?. I've got it bookmarked. But thanks for the added scene!

And I can't help you with the petition. Any Shakespearean Richard III is a travesty of history and a continuation of the smear campaign started by the Tudors. Is that high enough on my horse? *g*

I hope you enjoy that episode and missing scene as much as I did!

I *totally understand* your point about the travesty-of-history/political propaganda aspect of Shakespeare's Richard III. Seriously! To be brutally honest, I just want to see Freeman's performance. (I had tickets when I was in London, but unfortunately it was for one of the nights he had to miss when he was unwell.) If it helps, this adaptation is set in an alternate-history 1970s dystopia, so the performance is really about the PM, not the historical Richard III. That said, I'm quite sympathetic to your perspective.
