May the 4th be with you!

Happy Star Wars Day!

Today seems like the perfect opportunity to announce that it's official: my Fall 2015 online course for Mythgard Institute will be "The Force of Star Wars: Examining the Epic." I'm very excited!

May the 4th be with you !

Having been born in The Year of the Force (1 anno vis = 1977 a.d.), I can't describe how excited I am for this class.

Re: anno vis
Thank you so much for being interest! I expect the promo and class materials/outline to go up online in late June or by early July at the very latest, when class registration opens, and I'll definitely post all about that. The course itself will be twelve weeks long, starting the end of August and ending before Thanksgiving.

I'll post all details as soon as they're official!

w00t!!!

I use clips from the original trilogy for the Eastern Philosophy in Martial Arts class--partly for explaining Taoism, partly as an example of the trope where the wannabe student is repeatedly rejected by the potential master and has to demonstrate his persistence. I appreciate it more every time I see it!

I recently got hold of mp3's of the old radio versions of the original trilogy - quite a trip down memory lane, as we remembered listening to the first two in the early 80s. What neither of us quite realized at the time, in those days before affordable VCRs (i.e., we hadn't seen the movies more than three or four times each, nor recently), was that the radio versions do a heck of a lot of filling-in of scenes that must have happened but weren't depicted. In the radio of version of Episode IV alone, we get Luke on Tatooine, on the way to see his friends at Toshi Station, squinting up to catch flashes from the space battle in the sky overhead. And Leia running around pretending to do mercy missions and almost getting caught making rebel contacts (and getting out of it by flirting with an Imperial official!!!), then intercepting the Death Star plans and stashing them in R2-D2. And Han agreeing to settle for precious metals instead of actual money, seeing as how most of the Rebel Alliance's cash blew up with Alderaan. It's practically fanfic!

[Edited to add] Oops, got carried away there! I wanted to say that your course sounds awesome and I can't think of a better person to teach it! Go you!

Oh, that's brilliant!

It's funny that you mention the original radio adaptations, because I just downloaded the Audible versions so I could enjoy them again. I very clearly remember gathering around the radio and listening with my parents, and having genuine jaw-dropping moments when entirely new scenes appeared. It was like Christmas! I was so excited to have more content. You're right, it was like fanfic! I'm really looking forward to revisiting them.

And thanks a million for your encouragement! *huge hugs*

May the Force...
I'll be there! I've been hoping for a course on Star Wars or Star Trek. This will be a long summer, waiting for next semester.

Fantastic! Thank you so much. :)

Well, next year would be a good time for a Trek course, given it's the 50th anniversary year, wouldn't you say? *blinks innocently, not hinting at anything at all, oh no*
