Another work that directly alludes to Sherlock Holmes is Detective Conan, which got renamed Case Closed in the States for rather bizarre reasons detailed here. One of the Holmes connections not noted in that column is how Richard is in some ways analogous to Lestrade. Initially, he's portrayed as an incompetent buffoon. But later on he's shown to be fairly capable. His main flaw as a detective is that he tends to latch onto the first theory he comes up with and sticks with it until it's painfully obvious that it's incorrect.
