"I will not say the day is done"

Best wishes to gondoriangirl. Happy birthday, and may the hairs on your toes never grow less!

In other news, Ed Beeson of the Herald News published an article on fan fiction on Friday: "Online fan fiction puts a new spin on old relationships."

Now, in honor of gondoriangirl, one of my favorite verses from The Lord of the Rings, a passage that speaks to the very soul of -- what else? -- a Hobbit:

In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the day is done
Nor bid the stars farewell.

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Thank you for linking that nice article on slash. I'm encouraged that the press seems to be handling our genre with logic and equinimity.

That is probably my favourite of all the songs/poems. I'm such a geek, that I have this bit, 'above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars for ever dwell', as the tagline on my checks. It goes very nicely with the art/design on them.

Beautiful! I love that you've used it on your checks. I adore those verses.

You muse-poked me by posting that article, EH! I went all dangerously philosophical, lol.

And a brilliant post you made, too! I was really interested in how you drew in the dream material, theology, and popular culture - you made some great connections that I am going to be mulling over for a while. :) I look forward to seeing what kinds of responses it draws. Thanks so much for the heads up!

Glad to share! :) By the way, I checked out your art site: wonderful stuff! The coloring you've highlighted, especially with the sunflowers, is amazing. You are so gifted.

Nice to see you've returned to the world of the living and aren't so busy editing those silly old books anymore!

Thanks again for sending us Abominable...Ryan likes Jeffrey Combs too, as it turns out :-p

Did you see X-Men 3 yet? We just went today

No X-Men yet: I'm trying to wait until my husband's back on his feet, but I doubt I'll make it that long! What did you think?

Tell Ryan he has excellent taste. :)
