Many of my friends are celebrating birthdays today and tommorrow! Happy birthday wishes go out to jasonbsizemore, _snitchbitch, and dannyboy8406, and happy early birthday wishes go out to dracschick and juxiantang. May you all have fantastic days and wonderful years to come!

I have a few quick notes today:

* First of all, congratulations to my husband and his school for the exciting news they shared this weekend: "College to Change Name to Lenoir-Rhyne University."

* Second of all, I am proud to announce that the book chapter "Sexy Nerds: Illya Kuryakin, Mr. Spock, and the Image of the Cerebral Hero in Television Drama," which I had the great pleasure of co-authoring with st_crispins, is now available in the new book Common Sense: Intelligence as Presented on Popular Television, edited by Lisa Holderman and published by Lexington Books. It was great fun to revisit the worlds of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Star Trek, Blake's 7, The X-Files, MacGuyver, Stargate SG-1, VR.5, Buffy, Firefly/Serenity, Numb3rs, and NCIS with st_crispins; moreover, several fans and fan fiction authors on my friends list provided us with terrific quotes we used in the article. (You know who you are!) This piece was almost a decade in the making, so it's a thrill to see it in print at last.

* Speaking of the fabulous st_crispins, I recommend that you check her out (she's the blonde professor/expert with some terrific quotes) on the following clip. Backstage with Larry Nolan, Comcast's entertainment news show, did a piece on the new Man from U.N.C.L.E. DVD set, and they includeed clips from the Fandemonium extra that's among the set's bonus materials.

* And last, for your amusement: Which instruments would the denizens of the Star Wars universe play and why? Here's a guess: Guitar Wars?

"You know deep down this guy thinks he's Johnny Cash." (on Grand Moff Tarkin)
"Dude. He is so Clapton." (on Qui-Gon Jinn)
- Ale[X]-wing fighter at Guitar Wars?

"This guitar just looks like you need a beard to play it."

*giggles* Most excellent. Thanks for that laugh. And congratulations to all (one, two, three!) of you! <3

Isn't that Guitar Wars site a hoot?

Thanks so much! :)

Congratulations to your husband.

And thank you for the details of the book. I now have it on pre-order with Amazon.co.uk. Congratulations to you after a decade of work, I can quite believe it's very exciting.

Thanks so much for the congrats to him, and thanks also for being interested in the book! I must say, I'm anxious to read some of the other chapters. They look really interesting.

I really appreciate your encouragement and support. :)

Well, shoot. That book just went on my Wish List. :-)

Many, many congratulations to your husband. The new name is delightfully Gothic-sounding, as if I can expect figures to leap from the shadows in order to teach!

Aw, thank you so much! :)

He will love that description of the school name. Now that you say it, I can totally see it! Awesome.

Yay for our article! The book is finally out. You were a great, angst-free collaborator and I'd do it again in a NY minute. Hope there are other opportunities in the future.

Congrats to husband and his college.

As for the YouTube ---isn't that funny? Today Comcast, tomorrow Entertainment Tonight!

I'm so pleased to finally hold the book in my hands. It's real!

It was such a joy to work with you on this! I do hope we get to collaborate on another project in the future. I'd love it.

The video is terrific. I especially love your point about the significance of Illya's nationality, and how the contemporary parallel would be having an Iraqi as a protagonist. That really puts it into perspective. You have a terrific TV voice, to boot! :)

Psst ---know what? I hate my voice. I hate to see myself on camera. And I think the stylist put too much blush on my cheeks and made me too pink (she thought I was too pale).

But I'm glad you think I look okay. :)
Mar. 18th, 2008 11:43 am (UTC)
I think you look great! Not too pink at all. ;) And your voice is terrific. Mine sometimes goes high and chipmunk-like in certain microphone/taping conditions, which makes me sound like an elementary school student, but yours is adult and authoritative, and at the same time very pleasant to listen to and easy to understand. Perfect TV voice!

Congrats to your husband!

The chapter looks like it would be a lot of fun. I just added it to my Wish List. :)

Guitar Wars is just silly! I'm pretty nerdy, but I never would have pondered the idea. LOL
Mar. 16th, 2008 11:17 pm (UTC)
Aw, thank you so much! :)

I'd never thought of comparing guitars to the SW characters, either. It totally cracked me up!
Mar. 16th, 2008 07:18 pm (UTC)
Congrats on the latest publication! The video was great! It would be worth picking up those DVD's I would say.

Guitar Wars. ROFL!
Mar. 16th, 2008 11:19 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much! The DVDs are a must. Such amazing extra content. And they come in a cool metal case, too! LOL.

I am STILL laughing at Guitar Wars.

Congratulations all around!!

"It looks like it could cut through anything, like, say, your long lost son's forearm." Bahahaa! Excellent. And very timely -- I haven't watched Star Wars in such a long time, so I decided to start watching my way through them again in "chronological" order, starting with the prequels. I just finished Attack of the Clones. Not my favorite.
Mar. 16th, 2008 11:24 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much!

Oh man, Attack of the Clones was so not the finest hour for Star Wars. *shakes head sadly* But if you're starting with the prequels, you know at least that it's going to get better! :) I need to have a marathon like that one of these days. It's been too long. Enjoy!

Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Mar. 18th, 2008 11:40 am (UTC)
You're most welcome! *hugs* I hope you're having a great week.

Much exciting news, indeed! Congrats to your husband, you and st_crispins; I look forward to reading that chapter :D

I enjoyed that profile you posted up in your most recent entry, too.

I hope you had a great one!

Okay, was Crispin the one that told her students to say Ilya Kuryakin?

And I wonder if you know, the lady that is next to Napolean in the B&W shot while he is explaining what Thrush is (I thought it was a fungal infection), is that Majel Barrett? Cos she looks an awful lot like Nurse Christine Chapel to me.
Mar. 24th, 2008 01:07 pm (UTC)
Yes, that's her! She's a professor at St. Peter's College.

That really does look like Majel Barrett, doesn't it? I need to research who it is, because she's not credited as appearing in any Man from UNCLE episode. Hmmm....

Let me know what you find out. (Appropriate icon btw)
