"Pleasure to me is wonder"

Happy birthday to metal_aria and cathexys! May you both have wonderful days and fantastic years to come.

A few items of interest:

* A Field Guide to Harry Potter by Colin Duriez is now available. I had the pleasure of reading and commenting on a draft of this book and writing an endorsement for its back cover. Duriez includes an insightful analysis of the life and times of J.K. Rowling, the themes and worldview of the books, the images of good and evil in the stories, and the series in its literary context. I think the book's dictionary of beings, places, things, and events in the Harry Potter universe, overview of the plots of the seven novels, and Harry Potter timeline will also be of interest to fans and students alike.

* The Willows, a wonderful new magazine of classic-style Victorian weird tales in the tradition of Blackwood, Dunsany, Hodgson, Machen, and Lovecraft, now has an LJ community at willowsmagazine.

* I'm pleased to say that my school, Belmont University, will host the U.S. Town Hall Presidential Debate on October 7, 2008. I'm also pleased to say that, as a now "virtual professor," I won't have to worry about finding a parking place on campus that day. ;)

"Pleasure to me is wonder – the unexplored, the unexpected, the thing that is hidden and the changeless thing that lurks behind superficial mutability. To trace the remote in the immediate; the eternal in the ephemeral; the past in the present; the infinite in the finite; these are to me the springs of delight and beauty."
- H.P. Lovecraft, "The Defence Remains Open!" (1921)
