Thanks and Update

Hi everyone! We've been buried under the snowpocalypse for the last two days, but it looks like the weather's passed for now. Which is good, because I'm due to fly up to Washington, D.C. tomorrow for a four-day conference, and to do that, I need to get to the airport! The conference should be fascinating, and it feels like it's been ages since I was in D.C. (I had a short internship there while I was in college, and I do get back now and then). I'll be online to a degree while I'm gone.

A few quick notes:

* First of all, tremendous thanks to everyone who participated in the Sofanaut Awards. Because of your kind support, I've received the 2011 Sofanaut Award for Best Fact Article Contributor for my regular "Looking Back on Genre History" segments on StarShipSofa. I'm very grateful for this affirmation of something I so love to do, and I appreciate the wonderful listeners, who make it all worthwhile. Thank you, and congratulations the other winners of this year's Sofanaut Awards!

* Second, my most recent StarShipSofa "Genre History" segment, which discusses Native American authors of speculative fiction, is now available in the latest episode of the podcast. You can download it or listen to it here. If you listen, I hope you enjoy. (A full list of my past podcast segments, with links, is available here.)

* Third, happy birthday to mjolnir1964, and happy early birthday to altariel, pwilkinson, lukeski, seemag, heidi8, and thrihyrne. May each of you enjoy a wonderful day and a fantastic year to come!

* Last, I thought these two articles on young adult dystopias might be of interest:
--- From author Paolo Bacigalupi, in the New York Times: "The Dark Side of Young Adult Fiction"
--- A response from author Mike Brotherton, in his blog: "Dystopias are Realistic? I’m Not so Sure Paolo…"

This, I think, speaks for itself:

If you have time, can get there, and like cupcakes, I highly recommend Hello Cupcake in Dupont Circle. I'm partial to their You Tart, but you can't go wrong with most of their flavors. Plus, they have gluten free and vegan selections, to boot!

Oh, I'm so glad you told me about this! My hotel (Hotel Palomar) is in Dupont Circle, so I should be close enough to check this out. Mmmm, cupcakes. :) I appreciate the heads up!

Oh, that's great! Hello should be within walking distance. (If you see the Krispy Kreme place, you'll be close.)

It turns out I didn't have to go - they actually brought some in, catered, to our hotel. How awesome is that? And good heavens, the one I had was delicious... I mean, "Kaylee eating strawberries" delicious. :D

How awesome is that?! That is made of win! I'm so glad you were able to sample them without having to brave the cold streets of D.C.

I was so excited that they did that for you, I hit post too soon!

Congrats, and I love the photo. My son told me he'll be in DC in a few weeks... too bad the timing's off or I would have tried to make something work so you two could meet. ETA... just found out he's there the 17th-20th... awwww. Not that either of you probably had time to meet, anyway!

My son does a lot of poster design in his spare time, and your icon reminded me of this one (which was adapted from an actual cover, of course): http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~wellerst/other/dl.cgi?pdf=TalesFromTheArchive.pdf

"My document... it's... gone!" I love it! LOL.

Thanks so much for the kind words. Argh, I'm so sorry I'm just missing him being in DC, too. I'd love to meet him in person. I should've planned better! Maybe next time... surely our paths have to cross one of these days. I hope he has a good trip.

The Mike Brotherton link doesn't appear to be working.

Major congrats (cong-mice, & cong-voles) on the Sofanaut Award! "Good & good for you" wins the day -- how can something so educational be so much fun?

Will look forward to that latest segment -- I am currently incommunIPodo again. Sigh.

Congratulations on your award! \o/

(I'm not certain what a "sofanaut" is but being a sofa-loving scifi fan, I suspect I may be one *g*)

Awesome picture. Thanks for the laugh!
