Ouch! So there's that...

I'm back from participating in a fantastic colloquium on the political writings of the U.S. anti-slavery movement, which provided me terrific insights and much food for thought.

I stayed at the hotel where the conference was held, an establishment that first opened in 1931 and now is a National Historic Landmark. It was a study in art deco loveliness.

Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza

Unfortunately, all of the time I was supposed to spend catching up today was spent in doctors' offices and labs, because something over the weekend went awry with my Achilles tendon, and now it's definitely the wrong size/shape and decidedly less than comfortable in the bargain. Besides taking medication in the short term, it looks like I'll be wearing specially-designed footware for a month (!!!) to see if the tendon decides to behave. Unexpected, inexplicable, and bizarre. Not to mention inconvenient.

I think I owe every human being on the planet*** an email; I'll be catching up very soon, I promise!

As a parting thought, here's the "Sci-Fi Film Alphabet" by Steven Wildish. How many movies can you name?

*** Only a minor overstatement.

“They have assumed the names and gestures of their enemies, but have held on to their own, secret souls; and in this there is a resistance and an overcoming, a long outwaiting.”

Good grief! Again with the body-trying-to-kill-you thing... :::HUGS:::

Absolutely *gorgeous* hotel! Thanks for all the post cards lately - They have kept me going (I'm dying of the Plague or something...)

Seriously! Thanks for the sympathy. ::HUGS::

Isn't that hotel amazing?

Glad to hear the postcards were timed well. I do hope you're feeling much better, my friend! I'm sending positive vibes in your direction!

Re: sci-fi alphabet - that will be a nice but short diversion for my wife and I.

Glad you liked it! I've just posted my "answers" - do they agree with yours?

I LOVE the poster. Got all but 1. :)

Wow - impressive!

Wow, that ceiling really is lovely. Sorry about the foot!

Aw, thanks!

It is truly a sight to behold (the hotel). Also truly wonderful to get to meet you. Sorry to hear about the foot/ankle/heel. Will try to drop a longer note in the near future. KB

Re: Conference
It was fantastic to meet you, as well! What a wonderful conference that was. Thanks for the kind words re: my Achilles tendon. I'm well on the mend, thank goodness!

I look forward to keeping in touch. I hope our paths cross again soon!

I'm glad it was a good conference for you, and I am very sorry about your tendon. I hope it resumes working comfortably soon.

That is one beautiful ceiling! I'd like to go to Cincinnati just to see it (but in late spring or early summer, please.)

The poster is cute, too.

Thank you so much! I'm on the mend, thank goodness. I appreciate your good wishes.

That hotel is amazing. There are walking tours of the place! It was a treat to get to stay there.

I loved the poster. :)

I know from experience that the world gets very small when it's hard to walk. :-( Hope your tendon behaves itself soon! *hugs*

Z jumped out at me because I have actually seen that movie (about two hours of high-octane WTFery), and this account of it (scroll down to #4) made me laugh until I had to cross my legs . . .

Thank you so much! *hugs*

OMG, that description of Zardoz is the best. Hysterical! Thanks so much for the brilliant link. (It had me at the floating head "puking rifles to a crowd of diapered men on horseback.")

I hope REVELcon is going brilliantly!

Funny alphabet!

Something over the weekend went awry with my Achilles tendon

Good luck with that. I'm fighting with Achilles tendon problems for years now, first left, now right. Bleh :)

Ack! I'm so sorry to hear about your Achilles tendon woes. I can't imagine dealing with this over the course of years. Just a week's enough to drive me batty! Things are slowly getting better, and I'm hoping it's a one-time affair - and that you don't have any more problems with yours. *hugs*

E is Empire Strikes Back, G is Godzilla, H is HitchGuide, K is King Kong, P is Planet of the Apes, and W is War of the Worlds. Z looks vaguely familiar but I can't quite place it. I have no idea what the others could be. Anyone care to fill in the blanks?

Thanks for the challenge! I just posted my best guesses. (We agree on all the ones you listed.) I'm the first to admit that I didn't do it alone, by the way. ;) I thought it was a very clever poster, and several of them left me completely stumped!

That hotel sure does seem pretty!! And why must you make your tendon calamity sound so hilarious? I'm glad you have good humor about it, but please heal soon!! As funny as a gimpy Dr. Amy is, a Dr. Amy in pain is unforgivable!

It was gorgeous! There were walking tours of the place, it's such an unusual building. I was so pleased to have the chance to stay there.

And thank you for the kind words and good wishes re: my Achilles tendon! :D Much appreciated!
