The Half-Blood Prince "Soundtrack"

After reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, my first thoughts came in the form of songs. (Some of you are well aware of my habit of making soundtracks to... well, everything.) So, in case you're interested in my interpretation, here it is:

A Musical Response to HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

1) The Wizards' War Escalates (And Spills Over Into the Muggle World)
“Anyone else we know died?”

“Zombie,” The Cranberries

...Another mother's breaking heart is taking over.
When the violence causes silence,
We must be mistaken....

2) Snape’s Song
"It has happened that men have sinned greatly in the open, but done good deeds in secret, so that those who would disparage them have been fooled, with smoke instead of sunlight in their eyes."
St. John Climacus

(Note: This interpretation owes much to this essay about Spinner’s End.)

“The River,” Dan Fogelberg

...I was raised by a river, weaned upon the sky
And in the mirror of the waters I saw myself learn to cry
As the tears hit the surface I saw what had been done
I gave feet to my freedom and I did run

I ran far from the river, far as I could see
And as the sun hit my shoulders, I felt it burning me
How I longed for the waters as the fire raged
How I longed for the river as I aged

I will die by a river as it rolls away
Bury me in the night time, do not waste the day
High above the waters that roll on to the sea
All the angels in heaven will laugh at me...

3) The Order of the Phoenix
“The trouble is, the other side can do magic too…”

“A Fire is Burning,” Oyster Band

...Names would come like footprints
Whisper on the wind
Lover was a comrade was a stranger was a friend
When we slept our eyes were open
And there’s thumping in our chest
That said there is no, there is no, there is no rest
Because a fire is burning in our house...

We are not beginners
We will not be fooled
The times have been our teachers and they teach in iron rule
We do our best work in the dark
We do our thinking on the run
We will hang together ‘til the longest day is done...

4) Arthur and Molly Weasley’s Song
“Every single one of its nine hands was now pointing at ‘ mortal peril.’”

“And So Is Love,” Kate Bush

...In the end, what’s it all about?
It must be love...

Baby, for the sake of love.
And whatever happens, what really matters?
It’s all we’ve got, isn’t that enough?...

You let it slip, you let it slip
I love you more, I love you more for it.

Life is sad and so is love.

All for love, just for the sake of love,
You set me free, I set you free...

5) The Pensieve Song
“This time, you enter the Pensieve with me…and, even more unusually, with permission.”

“Bury My Lovely,” October Project

Cover the madness
Cover the fear
No one will ever
Know you were here
A figure in the hallway light
Returning like a ghost
Something that was left behind
Something in a child's mind...

A shadow from another time
Is waiting in the night
Something happened long ago
Something that will not let go...

6) Hormones Loose in Hogwarts
Young lurve...

“Too Lost in You,” Sugarbabes

...‘Cause I'm slipping away like the sand to the tide
Falling into your arms, falling into your eyes
If you get too near I might disappear
I might lose my mind...

7) Hermione’s Song
Dedicated to Won-Won.

“That’s All,” Genesis

...Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all
I could say day, you'd say night
Tell me it's black when I know that it's white
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

I could leave but I won't go
Though my heart might tell me so
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
So why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all...

8) Ron’s Song
Because she snogged Krum.

“Jealous Guy,” John Lennon

...I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy...

9) Harry goes with Dumbledore
“I am not worried, Harry… I am with you.”

“Still Waters at Night,” Joan Baez

Still waters at night in the darkest of dark
But you rise as white as the birch tree's bark
Or a pale wolf in winter, you look down and shiver
At still waters at night

Your eyes are as black as the blackness you're fearing
And yonder a bridge and a voice within hearing
Come walk on me softly, look down and you'll see
Still waters at night

You’ve reason to fear, there is no protection
But a garden of emeralds and a moonlit reflection
Of a boat in the distance, will the devil take his chance
At still waters at night...

10) Draco’s Song
“’I haven’t got any options!’ said Malfoy.”

“Catapult,” Counting Crows

...I wanna be the knife that cuts into my hand
And I wanna be scattered from here in this catapult
What a big baby, won’t somebody save me please
You won’t find nobody home...

I wanna be the light that burns out your eyes
‘Cause I know there’s little things about me
That would sing in the silence of so much rejection
In every connection I make
I can’t find nobody home...

11) Snape at the Tower
“Severus…please…”

“Center Stage,” The Indigo Girls

Falling, Falling, Falling, Falling down.
Look yourself in the eye before you drown.
Royal rebels discover you.
Trust? You turn, there is no truth...
Figures floating down to lay.
Meet the joker and the thief,
The king and queen but - no relief...

I cross myself before I die.
The leaping man, he asks me why.
"Well your rhythm is off" I reply,
"Now you must dance the dance that you imply!
"Your actions will follow you full circle round,
“Your actions will follow you full circle round,
“Your actions will follow you full circle round,
“Your actions will follow you full circle round,
“The higher the leap,” I said, “The harder the ground!"

12) Fleur’s Song for Bill
“All these scars show is zat my husband is brave!”

“I’ll See It Through,” Texas

You're all I ever wanted
You're all I ever needed - it's you
You're all I've ever wanted
And loving you's the right thing to do
And I'll see it through
I'll show you the love in my head
I'll show you the love that we had

13) Dumbledore’s Legacy
“Dumbledore would have been happier than anybody to think that there was a little more love in the world.”

“By Now,” Sarah Brightman

...A teardrop of silence
That's dissipating in an ocean of blue
So let me dive under
In memory of you
By now it's loving and affection
By now it's love
By now it's loving and affection, baby
By now it's love
And will you still see me
When I am lying under heavenly skies
And will you still feel me
When I reach out to you...

14) Ginny’s Song for Harry/Tonks’s Song for Lupin
“But you’ve been too busy saving the Wizarding world..."

“Trouble,” Shawn Colvin

...Baby, let me set you down
You look so troubled and I think I know
Just when you think you’ve come around,
There you go

I know the business of the heart
And it’ll get you anyway it can
And you need someone to walk with in the dark...

It's really hard to make your peace
So give me some credit for the hell I've paid
This world's a blessing and a beast everyday
So come on, baby, let me show you how
The less you know the more I comprehend
You don't have to drag me down
I descend...

15) Dumbledore’s Burial, Pt. 1
“Hagrid was walking slowly up the aisle between the chairs. He was crying quite silently, his face gleaming with tears, and in his arms, wrapped in purple velvet spangled with golden stars, was what Harry knew to be Dumbledore’s body.”

“1,000 Oceans,” Tori Amos

These tears I've cried
I've cried 1,000 oceans
And if it seems I'm floating in the darkness
Well, I can't believe that I would keep
Keep you from flying
So I will cry 1,000 more
If that's what it takes
To sail you home...

16) Dumbledore’s Burial, Pt. 2
“He suddenly remembered Dumbledore’s idea of a few words, ‘nitwit,’ ‘oddment,’ ‘blubber,’ and ‘tweak,’ and again had to suppress a grin..."

“Toast,” Tori Amos

...I raise a glass, make a toast
A toast in your honor
I hear you laugh and beg me not to dance
On your right standing by is Mr. Bojangles
With a toast he's telling me it's time
To raise a glass, make a toast
A toast in your honor
I hear you laugh and beg me not to dance
On your right standing by is Mr. Bojangles
With a toast he's telling me it's time
To let you go
Let you go...

17) Harry Looks to the Future
“I’m not coming back even if it does reopen...”

“For a Dancer,” Jackson Browne

Just do the steps that you’ve been shown
By everyone you’ve ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Another’s steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you’ll do alone

And now, a quote for the day:

"... No, my soul is not asleep.
It is awake, wide awake.
It neither sleeps nor dreams, but watches,
its eyes wide open
far-off things, and listens
at the shores of the great silence."

from "Is my soul asleep?" by Antonio Machado
