Just for Today - A Free Essay!

Every day Smart Pop Books puts an essay from one of its published collections online as a free view/download. Today it's one of my pieces: "Reimagining 'Magic City': How the Casts Mythologize Tulsa" from the 2011 book Nyx in the House of Night: Mythology, Folklore, and Religion in the P.C. and Kristin Cast Vampyre Series.

Cover for Nyx in the House of Night: Mythology, Folklore and Religion in the PC and Kristin Cast Vampyre Series (2011)

If you read it, I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for the tip! I downloaded it - though when/if I manage to read it, heaven knows... I've become very good at sitting on a large pile of files and media and not look at any of them. /weird

EDIT: I read it! Fascinating article - even without knowing anything about Tulsa or these books, it's a great read :)

Oh wow! Thank you so much for reading it. I'm delighted that you liked it, even without knowing the books or the city. You're the best. :)

Very cool, thanks for sharing! Though I do have to note that I can sympathize with the people in charge of Cascia Hall. Judging from what you have said, I can understand why they might feel they have been badly misrepresented, and that might be stinging a little too much for them to accept an olive branch. Maybe they will feel differently at a later date, but I would say they have a right to feel put upon.

Aw, thank you so much for checking it out! That was lovely of you. In the abstract, I agree with you; knowing Cascia Hall's relationship to the city, I feel somewhat less sympathetic (LOL). It certainly raised the school's "cool factor," despite the administration's chagrin. That said, I do think it was very important that the Casts included Catholic characters shown in a positive light - and they are really great heroines in the novels - to balance out the snarkiness aimed at the school.

The title of that book catches me, though that could be because I am on a kick with Nyx goddess of the night recently.
