Various Updates

* The latest Oklahoma City tornado!apocalypse passed my family by, although my sister had some very rough moments (read: hours) thanks to it. I'm most grateful for all of your concerns and good thoughts. I'm still catastrophically behind on my email. Please forgive me for my tardiness in replies.

* I love Goodreads and Bookmooch. So much! I'm here on Goodreads and here on Bookmooch, if you're ever there and interested in "friending."

* If you've missed the Peter Cushing blogathon at Frankensteinia, in honor of Cushing's 100th birthday, check it out!

* Spoilers! So the Doctor Who news is official. I look forward to seeing what's next. The finale blew my mind (in the best possible way), so I'm wholly invested, on the edge of my seat, and ready for more.

* Speaking of Doctor Who, don't miss the first episode of Kat and Curt's TV Re-View, where the Buffy and Doctor Who 'verses combine. It's going to be brilliant!!!!

* Have I mentioned how much we've loved the first season of Orphan Black? It's wonderful to find a new genre-related series that doesn't talk down to the audience. It's exceptionally well done and thoughtfully constructed. (I was deeply discouraged by Copper and Vikings, and frustrated to the point of genuine anger by The Following and Elementary, so it was a breath of very fresh air to be fascinated/delighted by Orphan Black. Thank goodness the next season is in the works! YMMV, of course; IDIC in all things, always, my friends.)

* Last but certainly not least, happy birthday to chorale, and happy early birthday to nakeisha, poenari, ebonange, frodosweetstuff, primroseburrows, , eowynmaiar, sally_maria, magicwondershow, groovekittie, eveningblue, peadarog, thehornedgod, baylorsr, lin4gondor, caitri, belleferret, valancourtbooks, potboy, alex_beecroft, nurdbunny, lisa_marli, graashoppa, toddlyles, pktheater, and lizzieausten. May you enjoy many happy returns of the day! Love to all of you!

But thank you. <3

I love Orphan Black, which surprises me since it's on the dark end for me. The actress is amazing!

Isn't she incredible? All those accents, characters, even body languages: I'm so impressed with her. I'm glad to hear you're loving it, too. I was thrilled to hear it had been renewed.

As I recently told a friend, I'm so darn tired of broadcasting to the world via facebook, texts, forums posts, etc. that I am safe and sound! This weather is wearing on me.

Bless your heart! It's wonderful to hear you're okay. But good grief, you've earned years of peace and quiet after these last couple of weeks. I'm so sorry for all you've been through lately.

Thank you for your birthday greeting! I must tell you that I am always in awe at how much living you manage to do. You must be very well organized.

Please give the lovely Virginia a pat from me and my partner, whswhs.

Virginia thanks you for the pats! :)

Oh, what a lovely thing to say - thank you! Ah, if only I were well organized... *sighs wistfully* I aspire to be, but practice never quite lives up to intentions. You've made my day with your encouraging words, though!

So glad to hear you and your family are all right, and thank you for the birthday wishes! I just bookmarked your Goodreads page, and saw that you're reading Sherlock Holmes. I bought the complete Sherlock Holmes set last year and have read all four novels and about half the stories. I'd had a collection as a child but I've found that those stories were very carefully selected. I'm finding the stories as an adult much grittier and Holmes much more interesting than just a smart detective.

Thank you! And you're most welcome. :)

Yes indeed! I agree wholeheartedly. I've reread through the canon several times in the last couple of years (I've done some related writing, and I'll soon be teaching a graduate seminar soon on Poe and Conan Doyle), and I find more to admire each time I revisit the works. As you say, quite gritty as well as meaty from a character perspective! I posted a few notes here of some of the character trajectories that really fascinated me this time around. I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying your rereading, too, and finding lots to appreciate.

I'm so glad to hear that your family is surviving all of the terrible storms! It's my childhood nightmare come true over there. :(

I'm so behind on Doctor Who... Rupert Grint or a woman, huh? Sounds good to me!

I haven't gotten to see any Orphan Black yet. I'll have to check it out! Tatiana Maslany is gorgeous. Multiple clones of her? Yes, please.

Thank you so much!

Mine, too. :(

Rupert Grint or a woman, huh? Sounds good to me!

Either of those works for me, too! I've given up on trying to follow the rumors, as they're coming so fast and furious at the moment. I'll be dying to "investigate" whoever gets the part, though, if I don't already know of him/her. It will be fascinating to see in what direction they take The Doctor next.

Tatiana Maslany is indeed gorgeous - and ridiculously talented. She manages to create completely different characterizations (accents, body languages, personality quirks) for multiple characters and switch seamlessly between them. She plays up to half a dozen different women in any given episode. Remarkable work, beautifully done. I'm so impressed with her!

A show that's recently caught my attention is Attack on Titan, partially because it makes giants terrifying again. Because let's face it, giants are the Rodney Dangerfields of faerie tale baddies, getting no respect. Sure they may be big and tough and mean, but they're also dumber than a sack of knobs, making it difficult to take them seriously. Not so with the Titans. As well as being next to unstoppable unless you hit the weak point at the back of the neck (not easy), they look like they were dredged out of the character designer's deepest, darkest nightmares. Specifically I'm thinking how they have either these fixed grins or slack-jawed expressions which give me the screaming heebie jeebies. It also has top-notch action sequences and an intriguing storyline, which almost makes up for the characters being a bit one-note up to this point. It's not a show for the weak of stomach, as the way the Titans kill is very messy.

Whoa! This sounds incredible. My skin's crawling just reading your description! Thanks for the heads up on this. It's great to hear the storyline is well done, too. Definitely one to check out!

I tried to dig up a decent picture of one of the Titans with Google image search and this was the best I could find.
