Oh that is brilliant - the tweet, and the shadow-y watcher both...
We were actually talking about people's stories in my writing group the other day, and one person told a story told to her by a woman who'd come into her artist's studio. The woman's six year old daughter had apparently asked her who "the man on the stairs" was - who of course no one else could see! When her mum quizzed her about him, she said that she didn't mind seeing him there - but she didn't really like it when he came to stand beside her when she was cleaning her teeth! The artist was having an open studio, and whilst this story was being told, another woman came in and began listening, who it turned out was a medium. She nodded along, and then said not to worry, because the girl wouldn't see the man any more - until she was thirty years old! I like to think that perhaps the man is the girl's future echo, and that when they do meet again in twenty four years time it will be both as solid human beings about to fall in love... *g*
Your story gave me chills. I loved it. I vote for your interpretation; I like the idea that the man was a "future echo," and that when they meet next, they'll both be alive and falling in love! That's a lovely, hopeful spin on an otherwise spooky tale.
